Retail Supervisor
We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Retail Supervisor to join our Spar team based on the University Campus. The ideal candidate will be able to combine excellenet customer service with strong retail and supervisory skills, to deliver an excellent experience for all of our customers.
This isn’t your typical retail role. Alongside the day-to-day running of our SPAR store, you’ll get involved in stock management, our in-house bakery, clothing and visual merchandising and our growing online clothing offer. You’ll also play an important role in supporting the Retail team and taking responsibility for the store when required.

About the Role
As Retail Supervisor, you’ll play a key role in the day-to-day running of the store, with your main responsibilities including:
Service Delivery
- To deliver exceptional customer service at all times and as they arise to deal with customer complaints in an efficient manner.
- To ensure that all store merchandising standards and cleanliness are of the highest standard and that the store is suitable replenished prior to the end of your working shift.
- To work within the shop and stock room areas in accepting deliveries of Fresh, Frozen and Ambient products and carrying out stock shop floor replenishment ensuring that stock rotation is carried out.
- To ensure that all deliveries are checked and that any discrepancies are reported without delay to the Commercial Operations Manager or his/her deputy.
- To follow good stock management processes, ensuring stock is appropriately rotated and organised within the bakery and back-of-house areas.
- To undertake visual merchandising of clothing and other retail products in line with agreed standards.
- To manage the preparation, processing and fulfilment of online clothing orders.
- To carry out stocktakes as and when required.
- To complete Retail orders for the replenishment of stock when required.
- To ensure that the reduction and wastage store procedures are completed as per the store policy and that you follow the requirements to minimise wastage where necessary.
- Keep up to date with current promotions and new products ensuring that at every opportunity you are promoting these to our customers.
- To act as designated Duty Manager at times when only the Retail SPAR shop is open and be responsible for the opening up and closing down of Student Central.
Reporting and Information Management
- To complete all due diligence checks and records as per the store standards.
- To complete all opening and closing checklists ensuring that these checks are documented as per the store standards.
- To report any till discrepancies, large void or refund transactions to the Retail Manager or their deputy.
- To report any cash discrepancies to the Retail Manager or their deputy.
Team Working
- To work with our Retail team members ensuring that they have the correct level of Supervision, direction, information and support to complete all the jobs required throughout their shift.
- To contribute as a team player to the successful running of the store.
Compliance
- To ensure that all cash handling procedures are completed as per the store procedures.
- To ensure that all operator and management functions of the EPOS till system are completed as per the store standards.
- To ensure that the security of the Retail shop is not compromised and that all lockdown procedures are completed correctly, and any concerns are raised to the Duty Manager prior to leaving the store.
- To operate in accordance with all relevant statutory laws relating to Health and Safety, Food Hygiene and age-restricted products.
- Adhere to all company standards of uniform, policies and procedures.
- Carry out all duties in line with SPAR’s and HUSU’s policies and in line with the organisation’s values and strategic aims.
- To attend compulsory training days and complete all online training programmes as required.
General duties and responsibilities
- Ensure confidentiality at all times in the handling and dissemination of information and data, and embedding and implementing GDPR across the workload.
- Maintain a positive atmosphere amongst all staff and customers.
- Carry out any other reasonable instruction asked by the Retail Management Team or Senior Leadership Team.

About You
Essential
- Basic food hygiene
- Previous experience of working within a fast-paced food to go, customer facing retail or similar environment.
- Previous experience of clothing retail and/or visual merchandising.
- Previous experience of cash handling and following cash management procedures.
- Previous experience supervising a team within a busy commercial environment.
- Understanding of a Students Union and the role our Retail shop plays within this environment.
- Knowledge of Health & Safety, Food Hygiene, Licensing Law and Age related products within a Retail environment.
- The ability to carry out manual handling of deliveries and movement of stock items throughout the Retail environment.
- To be able to demonstrate the ability to work on your own initiative and within a team.
- To be able to demonstrate your ability to have an organised approach in your working methods.
- To be competent in your ability with literacy, numeracy, IT and communication skills.
- To be flexible in your approach to the hours of work which will include working evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
- To be fluent in the English language.
Desirable
- Any previous training within a retail environment.
- Personal licence.
- Knowledge of food labelling guidelines (Natasha's Law)
