Retail Service Leader - Student Staff (Zero Hour Contract)

We are looking for Retail Service Leaders- zero hours to work in SPAR - our students' shop on the campus of the University of Hull.

- Advancement of education, promoting the interests and welfare of students during study and representing, supporting and advising students.
- Being the recognised representative channel between students and the University of Hull and other representative bodies.
- Providing social, cultural sporting, recreational activities, and forums for discussions and debate for the personal development of its students.
Our Commercial Subsidiary provides a range of services for students including, a Supermarket, a pub, a nightclub, coffee and food outlets.

About the Role
- Deliver exceptional customer service at all times.
- To ensure that all store merchandising standards and cleanliness are of the highest level and that the store is fully replenished prior to the end of your working shift.
- To complete Due Diligence checks and records as per the store policies and procedures.
- To complete opening and closing checklists as per the store policies and procedures.
- To ensure that all cash handling and management functions of the POS till system are completed as per the store policies and procedures and that any known till discrepancies, large void or refund transactions are reported to the Commercial Operations Manager or his/her deputy.
- To keep up to date with current promotions and new products ensuring that at every opportunity you are promoting these to our customers.
- To work with our student team members ensuring that they have the correct level of Supervision, information and support to complete all the jobs required by them throughout their shift.
- To ensure that the security of the Retail shop is not compromised and that all lock down procedures are completed as per the store policies and procedures and that any concerns are raised to the Duty Manager prior to leaving the Store.
- To ensure that the reduction and wastage store procedures are followed.
- To ensure that all deliveries and returns are checked and that any discrepancies are reported without delay to the Commercial Operations Manager or his/her deputy.
- Ensure confidentiality at all times in the handling and dissemination of information and data, and embedding and implementing GDPR across the workload.
- Carry out all duties in line with SPAR’s and HUSU’s policies and in line with the organisation’s values and strategic aims.
- To ensure that you are operating to all statutory laws relating to Health & Safety, Food Hygiene and age related products are followed at all times.
- To attend compulsory training days and complete all on line training programmes as required.
- Carry out any other reasonable instruction asked by the Retail Management team.
Reports to; Retail Manager & Commercial Operations Manager
Direct / Indirect reports: Up to 10 indirect reports during any working shift
About You
Essential
Qualifications & Trainings
• Should be a student at the University of Hull for the 2025/26 academic year
• Any previous training received within a Retail environment
Experience
• Previous experience of working within a fast paced Retail environment.
• Previous experience of cash handling.
• Previous experience of supervising a team of 6 or more staff members.
Skills/Ability/Knowledge
• Knowledge of Health & Safety, Food Hygiene, Licensing Law and Age related products within a Retail environment.
• Understanding of a Students Union and the role our Retail shop plays within this environment.
• To be able to demonstrate the ability to work on your own initiative and within a team.
• To be able to demonstrate your ability to have an organised approach in your working methods.
• To be competent in your ability with literacy, numeracy, IT and communication skills.
• To be flexible in your approach to the hours of work which will include working evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
• To be eligible to work in the UK.
• To have a UK bank account in your own name.
• To be fluent in the English language.
• Have a fixed place of residence and live within a reasonable travelling distance from your place of work.
Desirable
• Any previous training received within a Retail environment
• To able to work over the Christmas, Easter and summer vacation periods.
