Hull University Students’ Union (HUSU) is looking for a dedicated and detail-driven Finance Manager to lead our financial operations. Hull University Students’ Union is a Charity, with a large Commercial subsidiary; our primary purposes are:

Our Commercial Subsidiary provides a range of services for students including, a Supermarket, a pub, a nightclub, coffee and food outlets.

About the Role

Financial Administration & People Management

  • Manage day-to-day financial operations across both the charity and its trading subsidiary.
  • Lead and coordinate the day-to-day activities of the Finance team, ensuring resources are effectively allocated and managed to meet organisational needs.
  • Manage, support and develop the Finance team to ensure efficient finance operations, including setting and monitoring performance targets.
  • Oversee financial processing including sales reconciliation, purchase ledger, bank reconciliation, and month-end close.
  • Oversight of outsourced payroll provision, ensuring accuracy, compliance, timeliness, and maintaining a good working relationship with the payroll provider.

Financial Reporting & Business Insight

  • Produce timely, accurate monthly management accounts and performance reports for the COO, Senior Leadership Team, and Trustee Board committees.
  • Monitor sales, margins, and profitability across all commercial departments.
  • Develop financial dashboards and reports to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Deliver finance training sessions and materials to staff and students to promote financial awareness and budget ownership across the organisation.
  • Prepare papers for the Finance Committee and Trustee Board to provide financial insights and enable them to ascertain if the organisations finances and budgets are being managed in an appropriate manner.
  • Support the management of the asset register, procurement compliance, capital programme and insurance cover and ongoing management.

Commercial Business Partnering

  • Act as a financial business partner to department heads (Bars, Shop, Entertainment, and Online Competition), supporting operational and strategic decisions.

Charity & Commercial Governance

  • Ensure compliance with internal financial policies and procedures across both the charity and trading subsidiary and all external legal requirements.
  • Work with external accountants and auditors to support year-end accounts and regulatory submissions.
  • Maintain clear financial segregation and transparency between charity and trading activities.
  • Updating and maintaining the Financial Framework document.
  • To ensure HUSU adheres to current statutory financial and reporting requirements consistent with our position as a registered charity.

Financial Planning & Budget Management

  • Lead the annual budgeting process, including collaborating with stakeholders across departments to prepare, consolidate, and review budget submissions to ensure they are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Ensure budgets align with business objectives, KPIs, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and maintain detailed financial models and forecasts, across multiple years where required, to support strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Monitor budget performance throughout the financial year, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions.
  • Provide insightful analysis and commentary on budget variances, trends, and financial risks.
  • Maintain and enhance budgeting tools, templates, and reporting dashboards for improved accuracy and efficiency.
  • Coordinate mid-year reforecasting and rolling forecast updates as required.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, policies, and external financial regulations during budget setting and monitoring.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Implement and improve financial systems, processes, and controls to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline reporting and automate workflows.
  • Ensure that personal knowledge and skills are continuously updated to enhance effectiveness in the role.

General duties and responsibilities

  • Ensure confidentiality at all times in the handling and dissemination of information and data and embedding and implementing GDPR across the workload.
  • Carry out all duties in line with HUSU’s policies and in line with the organisation’s values and strategic aims.
  • Undertake other reasonable duties as required by the COO, appropriate to the grade and responsibilities of the post.

About You

Essential

  • Part-qualified or qualified (ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) or Level 4 AAT with experience.
  • Experience in a finance role with responsibility for multi-income streams.
  • Experience working in or with trading subsidiaries and/or commercial arms of charitable organisations.
  • Ability to manage, coach, and motivate a small team.
  • High proficiency in Excel and familiarity with accounting systems.
  • Good understanding of financial processes, reporting, and management accounts.
  • Strong understanding of UK accounting standards and HMRC regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organisational, analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Desirable

  • Experience within the charity, hospitality, retail, or events sectors.
  • Experience with online commerce or competition-based businesses.
  • Understanding of charity finance regulations and reporting.
