Events Set Up - Student Staff (Zero Hour Contract)
SP1 - £12.21 per hour
We are looking for additional staff who will be able to start working for us before the Summer break and can be part of the team through the next academic year (September 2025 to May 2026). If you are a current University of Hull student and will be continuing your studies for the academic year 2025-26 and would like to be be part of our Facilities Team, we would love to hear from you.
Join a fun and dynamic team responsible for setting up a variety of events including club nights, Bongo’s Bingo and live music events in the Students’ Union and sometimes events across campus. In addition to event set-up, you’ll also help keep the Students’ Union looking great by doing tasks like picking up litter, sweeping, cleaning windows, and organizing equipment. The role involves a lot of hands-on work, including lifting and moving tables, chairs, and benches. It’s a great opportunity to learn new skills, meet people, stay active and be part of making events at Student Central a success!

About the Role
You do not have to have specific experience in event set-up as training will be provided and support given throughout your employment at HUSU. All PPE will also be provided. Shifts will mainly be for 3-4hrs during the day and although this is a zero-hour contract, we would usually expect you to be available to work between 4 and 16 hours during term-time (consideration will, of course, be given for availability & leave).

Key Responsibilities
- Attend in-house training, courses and complete documentation, where required
- Adherence to all Health & Safety regulations
- Assist in the physical set up and breakdown of event spaces, including moving furniture, arranging seating, setting up tables.
- Ensuring that all equipment is safely installed and compliant with health and safety standards is a crucial responsibility.
- Setting up event spaces according to precise layouts and specifications is essential. This includes accurate placement of equipment, décor, and seating arrangements.
- Ensuring events are set up in a timely manner and there are no disruptions to the event schedule.
- Work as part of a team to meet deadlines
- Completing safety checks of the building and reporting back.
- Attend staff meetings, when required.
- Must be flexible
- Any other duties that may be reasonably required
Person Specification
Essential
- Ability to lift and move equipment. Events set-up often involves handling heavy equipment such as tables, chairs, lighting, and sound systems. Physical work is required.
- Good attention to detail and ability to follow precise set-up requirements.
- Understanding of health and safety considerations and experience of complying with health and safety rules, either in employment, voluntary work or education.
- Experience of working irregular shifts across unsociable hours.
- Punctual and reliable and able to work flexibly when required.
- Ability to adhere to deadlines and work with specific timeframes. Being able to work under pressure while meeting deadlines is essential in this role.
- Proactive attitude, including identifying potential issues or needs before they become problems.
- Confident working in busy areas.
- Knowledge of the Students’ Union.
- An understanding of the events we put on in Asylum and in Student central.
Desirable
- Events set-up experience.
- Moving and handling experience.
- Experience in identifying and addressing hazards.
- Experience of using Microsoft Excel including data entry and completing forms.
- Proven ability to anticipate need. Whether it's preparing event spaces in advance or performing preventative maintenance, anticipating requirements is a key asset.
