Retail Bakery Assistant - Student Staff (Zero Hour Contract)

We are looking for current University of Hull students to join our team as Retail Bakery Assistants (zero hours). This role will be working in the SPAR store based in Student Central.

We are looking for additional staff to help us in our store who will be able to start working for us before the summer break and can be part of the team through the next academic year (September 2026 to May 2027).

About the Role

  • ​To prepare hot and cold bakery products following the company specification ensuring that all products are merchandised to the highest of standards when on display within the bakery counters.
  • ​Ensure that the levels of food prepared reflect the level of business ensuring good availability but also ensuring that the wastage levels do not exceed the set limits.
  • ​To assist with the checking off and putting away of deliveries.
  • ​To ensure that the reduction and wastage store procedures are followed and that you follow the requirements to minimise wastage where necessary.
  • To complete all opening and closing checklists ensuring that these checks are documented as per the stores procedures.
  • ​Deliver exceptional customer service at all times and as they arise to deal with customer complaints in an efficient manner.
  • ​To follow good stock management processes ensuring that stock is rotated and organised in the bakery and back of house areas.
  • ​To initially report any product quality issues or complaints to the Retail Store Management Team.
  • To ensure cleaning standards within the bakery are of the highest quality by following and signing off on all cleaning rotas and closing checklists.
  • ​Ensure that the bakery equipment is maintained and clean and that any faults are reported through to the Retail Store Management Team
  • Ensure that all food hygiene and health & safety legislation procedures are adhered to and that all Due Diligence checks and records are completed as documented within the local authorities’ safer food, better business policy.
  • Adhere to all company standards of uniform, policies and procedures.
  • Keep up to date with current promotions and new products ensuring that at every opportunity you are promoting these to our customers.
  • ​To support the Retail shop team with front of house duties during quieter periods throughout the year.
  • To contribute as a team player to the successful running of the bakery.
  • ​Maintain a positive atmosphere amongst all staff and customers.
  • Ensure confidentiality at all times in the handling and dissemination of information and data, and embedding and implementing GDPR across the workload.
  • ​Carry out all duties in line with SPAR’s and HUSU’s policies and in line with the organisation’s values and strategic aims.
  • ​To attend compulsory training days and complete all on line training programmes as required.
  • Carry out any other reasonable instruction asked by the Retail Management team.

About You

Essential

  • Previous experience of working within a fast paced food preparation environment.
  • Understanding of a Students Union and the role our Retail shop plays within this environment.
  • To be able to demonstrate the ability to work on your own initiative and within a team.
  • To be able to demonstrate your ability to have an organised approach in your working methods.
  • To be competent in your ability with literacy, numeracy, IT and communication skills.
  • To be flexible in your approach to the hours of work which will include working evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
  • To be eligible to work in the UK.

Desirable

  • Basic Food Hygiene Qualification.
  • To be able to work over Christmas, Easter and summer vacation periods.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety, Food Hygiene, Licensing Law and Age related products within a Retail environment.
